Masoor daal with Gobhi- Cauliflower and Red lentil curry

Spring is here
Weather has begun to get warm and I am loving the mildly cold-ish warm weather. It’s neither the time to eat cold desserts and salads nor warm soups. It’s the time to spend outdoors. I am indulging myself to long walks and lot of time in our patio garden. This year, I want much more greener patio thus giving me the title of “plant Mumma”. Husband jokingly calls me a “green Mumma”. 😀
While I am busy basking in this mild sunlight and spending my time moving my sapling pots according to the sunlight, I am not much active in the kitchen. This is causing me to look forward to more one-pot meals or quick meals where that aren’t attention seeking. I have the modest pressure cooker and I am using it to it’s best. I stir up everything together and pressure cook it for 1-2 whistles and I am sorted.
My quick rassa bhaaji
The other day when I spent a lot of time in Walmart grazing through the different herb saplings, it was almost late evening that I came back home. Once home, I spent the next hour planting two beautiful saplings of tulip and yellow daffodil each. I was too confused about the herb saplings so I ended up picking flowers instead. By the time I was done, I was tired and weary. I pushed my way to the kitchen for making evening dinner. Making dinner at our home is not easy I tell you. My husband is a picky eater and he will only eat what he likes, which does not include any form of rice.
I gazed through the fridge and found a big head of cauliflower. I thought of many possibilities to pair with cauliflower and most of them were not at home while some I did not want to include. And so, I decided to pair it with dal (lentils). I don’t usually cook Masoor dal (red lentils) because I have never had it while growing up (Perfect example of you are what you eat, growing up)
Stubbornly enough, I decided to ditch my regular pigeon peas and picked up red lentils. Stirred up everything, I have just added Goda Masala for the flavor and that brings out the best taste and pressure cooked it for 2 whistles. Meanwhile, made some millet rotis, chopped some cucumbers to make raita and TADAAAA! Our dinner was sorted. Uff! isn’t it great to have home cooked food that is quick and easy after a long day of work.
My heart and stomach feels full while I write this after gobbling over the food and resting up peacefully.
Gobhi Masoor daal ki sabji- Cauliflower and Red lentil curry

Recipe type: Indian gravy
- 2 tsp of goda masala
- 2 tbsp of oil
- 1 tsp of mustard seeds
- pinch of asafoetida -hing
- 4-5 curry leaves
- 3 red chilies
- 1 tsp of turmeric powder
- 2 cloves of garlic chopped
- 1 inch of ginger chopped
- ½ cup of finely chopped onions
- 2 cups of cauliflower florets or roughly ¼ head of cauliflower florets
- ½ cup of red lentils or masoor daal
- 2 cups of water
- salt as per taste
- 1 tbsp chili powder (optional)
- Thoroughly wash the red lentils and soak it for 10 mins.
- Cut small florets of cauliflower and wash it in water for 2 mins.
- In a pressure cooker, heat oil on a medium flame and add mustard seeds once oil is hot.
- Also add curry leaves, red chilies, asafoetida, ginger and garlic.
- Once the garlic turns slightly brown, add onions and saute until translucent.
- Add cauliflower florets when onion is cooked, Adjust the salt for taste and add chili powder if required.
- Add water to the this mixture and pressure cook it until 2 whistles.
- Open lid after 5 mins and garnish it with fresh coriander.
- Pair it with hot rotis for a comfy yummy dinner.
